From Tulips to Computers in Auction

Most of us know the story of the burst bubble tulip price when merchants in Holland were swapping houses for single tulip bulbs in the Seventeenth century.

In the sixteen fifties one man in Holland had a dozen tulip bulbs of the Semper Augustus variety and was offered three thousand guilders each. In auction he would almost certainly have got double that amount.

In order to appreciate how much money that was it may be worth a visit to Holland today and go to the national art gallery to view one of the greatest paintings of the same vintage; The night Watchman by Rembrandt.

This superb work of art was sold at the same time the tulip offer was being made for half the amount at fifteen hundred guilders.

The most extraordinary part of this story is that we no longer know the name of the man who owned the dozen tulips but we do know that he refused to sell them!

Today anything at all can be sold in auction as long as it isn’t Mother-in –law or any other form of human life.

The internet offers the opportunity to sell a car, a watch a boat or a plane ticket. Think of anything and you will find it somewhere online and available.

The new type of auction called a penny auction only sells brand new original goods. This can be anything from the latest laptop or hand held Wi-Fi device to something as benign as supermarket shopping discount vouchers.

The only thing to remember about penny auctions is that they are unlike conventional auctions and a proper understanding is essential if you do not want to just throw money away.

Before participating the bidder must buy credit and for this it is necessary to have a credit or debit card and be over the age of eighteen.

Each bid is placed as the clock ticks away and although each bid has cost a pound or perhaps more, the goods only increase in value by one penny.

Auction Fun and Bargains Galore

Whilst it is true that the new online auctions known collectively as penny auctions can bring some fantastic deals it is most important to understand the way the system works before embarking on the game.

All types of auction can be fun and entertaining but if it becomes addictive then it can become bad news for the wallet.

Anyone with an addictive personality should stay away from online auctions and lock the wallet away.

When something very unusual or very rare comes up for conventional auction it can attract worldwide interest. The auction of a vintage racing car or a lost Van Gogh attracts intense interest from bidders and onlookers alike.

There is no better atmosphere than ferocious bidding between two people where the rapid fire bids increase at a few hundred thousand pounds a bid and the reserve and estimated price is left miles behind.

There is usually a spontaneous applause when a work of art goes under the hammer for double its estimate. Usually for these major works of art there is a proxy bidder in the room or on the end of a telephone line.

To rule out the prospect of the telephone caller being the local fruitcake in a phone box around the corner, the big auctioneers have already taken a deposit on credit of at least twenty per cent of the estimate or reserve.

OK most of us are not in that sort of league but we can still have a bit of fun with these penny auctions and also strike a good bargain. All the goods on offer are brand new and where applicable will carry original warranty.

The winners are either very lucky beginners or more likely regulars who have study the way it works in detail and have had a bit of experience.

There are various techniques to adopt and these can only be learnt in time so the best advice is to start on low value items and have a modest budget.

Nothing Is For Nothing

If you like auctions and want to try something new, you might be interested in on line bidding.  There are well established sites that allow you to place your unwanted items on line and get people to buy them.  These sites do not charge you to place a bid, but they are also open to abuse by fraudsters.

A Penny auction is the best way to get your items for the best price and it is worth having a look at these if you want to buy brand new products that the web site auctioneers have placed there.  You will not be able to put your own items on these.

You need to register with them before you can enter one of these and the registration can be costly.  These sites also do not let you bid for free, although they might give you an initial number of bids free as a welcome present.  Every bid will cost you a certain amount of money, typically about fifty pence a bid. This money will be lost if you do not win your item.  It is a bit like gambling, really, but some people like the rush of adrenalin it gives you.

You will be pitted against an unknown number of other people who will also bet and the trick is to put your bid in at the price time that the clock runs out.  If this does not happen, then the clock resets itself for a certain amount of time; anything from twenty seconds to two minutes.

Before you register, it is worthwhile to research the site you want to join.  Do not register with one that you cannot find any information about.  There are people on the net who will either recommend sites such as these and they will tell you which ones to avoid.

Another sound bit of advice is never to send money to these sites.  The best way to pay for your bids is with a credit card.  This will protect you if anything goes wrong.
